PROGRAM NOTE
I started writing this piece shortly after the death of George Floyd and was listening to a lot of music from the early 70s at the time. It struck me how many bitter truths present in those lyrics have gone unheard for so long. The Fela Kuti tune "Why Black Man Dey Suffer" was stuck in my head and became a meaningful phrase upon which to reflect in writing this meditation.
