I can't hear what the computer (ProTools) is playing

1. Make sure the STEREO MASTER fader has been turned up

*NB: if that didn't fix it, be sure to turn it back down to a reasonable level before doing anything else

2. Press the PROTOOLS STEREO hotkey (right of mixer's digital display)

3. Check PROTOOLS I/O &Hardware SETUP to be sure OUTPUT is set to OPTICAL:

Go to SETUPS --> HARDWARE - copy correct settings below

*NB: The fast way is to set everything to NONE by
1. holding down the OPTION key, then selecting NONE then
2. hold OPTION+APPLE and set <OUTPUT 1-2> to OPTICAL 1-2; repeat for <INPUT 1-2>... the rest (3-4 = OPTICAL 3-4, etc.) should fill in for you.

*NB: The clock source should be OPTICAL

If you then go to SETUPS --> I/O it should look like this:

I can't hear the PREVIEW in AudioSuite windows or region list.

1. Go to "Setup" --> "I/O"
2. Be sure the "Audition Paths:" is set to "A 1-2".

3. In the ProTools Mix or Edit window, make sure the output for track(s) playing is/are set to A 1-2 (Stereo)

To record from microphone:

1. Plug in mic to one of the ties (1-8) - for this example, we're using mic tie 5
2. Turn up the gain knob on preamp 5 at the top of the board
3. Make sure channel 5 is turned on (ON button lit)
4. Make sure fader on channel 5 is up to 0 dB
5. Press "Display" under ROUTING section of the board until you see INPUT CH1-24 ROUTING
6. Verify that channel 5 is routed to input 5 (5 is highlighted blue - use arrows bottom right to move cursor & enter to select)
7. In ProTools, make sure the input on the track to which you are recording is "Input 5"
8. Make sure track is record enabled. If so, you should be able to monitor a signal on the track's meter.

If you run into problems, check hardware and I/O setup to make sure Inputs1-8 are Optical1-8.

iTunes is playing, but I can't hear it through the speakers.

1. If you've had ProTools open, you'll have to RESTART the computer. (This resets the audio playback device so it can be used by iTunes)
2. Under the apple menu in the top left of the screen, choose "System Preferences" --> "Sound"
3. Select the "Output" tab
4. "Internal speakers" will be default - choose Digidesign HW
5. !!!! Return settings to "Internal Speakers" when done.

Peak is playing, but I can't hear it through the speakers.

1. In Peak, make sure the audio hardware is set to "Digidesign" and that the outputs are optical.

How do I use the headphone system for tracking?

*Aux 7&8 automatically send ProTools outputs 1-2 (channels 25-26 on board) to the headphone system (RANE).

In order to just hear it through the headphones alone, you must stop the output from being sent to the stereo bus (aka speakers):
1. Press the "Display" button under ROUTING section of the board until you have INPUT CH25-48 ROUTING on the screen.
2. With the arrow keys in the lower right move the cursor to the "S" under channels 25 and 26 and hit "enter" to disable (or un-highlight) routing to the stereo bus.

If you need to change the aux send level (how much output is sent to headphones):
1. Press "Display" under AUX SELECT until you get INPUT CH25-48 AUX VIEW
2.The X-axis displays the channels, the Y-axis displays the aux sends. There should be a blue box at ch25aux7 and ch26aux8
3. Move the cursor over the box and move the flat, black wheel at the bottom right up (clockwise) or down to change level.
4. !!!! RETURN to 0 dB when done!

When in doubt... Restart the computer
